The Arthur Miller
Festival: Our season includes a tribute
to a giant of American dramatic literature –
Arthur Miller. Two of his most acclaimed plays
anchor the salute – A View from the Bridge and Death of a Salesman. In addition,
we’ll have Monday evening readings, screenings
and lectures exploring his other work. The Festival is sponsored by Susan and
Steven Bralove, John and Linda Derrick, Wendy Farrow
Raines, Mark and Merrill Shugoll and Dick and
Katie Snowdon.
Notes from Molly: Miller often used his plays to comment on major
political issues in this case McCarthyism. Eddie
Carbone’s life is destroyed because he betrayed
his friends to the government. Miller’s responding
to his colleague Elia Kazan, who believed that
it was his duty to give the names of suspected
Communists to the House Un-American Activities
Committee. Kazan’s film “On the Waterfront”
features a comparable setting and theme but
portrays its central figure heroically.
