First Daily
Puppetry & Performance (8-12)
Create fanciful creatures and expressive characters using a variety of visual arts techniques.  Then, bring them to life and tell their stories as you learn puppetry performance skills.

Still-Life Drawing (8-12)
A Daily for the artist interested in improving his or her powers of observation and drawing technique.  Drawing from still life, campers will focus on composition, value, contour and texture.

Indian Classical Dance (8-12)
Explore the beautiful art of Kuchipudi, a form of Indian classical dance.  Learn its fast rhythms and intricate hand movements from a professional Kuchipudi dancer.  You’ll also look the part as you create your own Kuchipudi costume! 

Brothers Grimm (8-12)
Bring your favorite fairy tales to life! Study the basic elements of adaptation and what it takes to bring a story from the page to the stage. Critical analysis, playwriting and acting will all be brought into play in this Daily, ending with production of our favorite fairy tale!

Shakespeare (8-12)
In this Daily, we will look at the life and times of William Shakespeare, so we can better understand some of his plays. But this isn’t English class – Shakespeare is meant to be acted! Discover the wit, wisdom, comedy and tragedy of Shakespeare, and see why performers speak his words over 400 years after they were first heard. 

Costume Design (8-12)
Feathers, silk, sequins and velvet:  the clothes can make the character.  Learn the basics of costume design from script to stage.  Experience costume design from picking out information in the play to visualization, research, sketching and even some production.

On Broadway (10-12)
Are you a triple threat: actor, singer, dancer?  Do you want to be? This Daily will increase your skills while focusing on scenes, songs and dances from that most American art form, the Broadway musical.

Stretch & Condition (8-15)
Awaken and limber up your body each morning with yoga and Pilates.  A great way for artists of all types to warm up their most important instruments: the mind and the body.  Wear comfortable clothes for movement.

Fiber Art (12-15)
Learn how to knit a scarf, hand sew a bag, start a patchwork quilt (or blanket or skirt or…) and embroider on just about anything.  When someone asks you where you got that unique piece, you’ll proudly say, “Oh, I made that myself.”

Painting (12-15)
Campers will experiment with the different ways of using acrylic paint and various tools, in addition to brushes, that can be used to apply paint. We'll explore how acrylic paint can be used for quick sketches as well as longer, more finished looking pieces.

Slam-Dunk Audition (12-15)
Ever wonder what it takes to nail an audition? We all do. Campers will
learn the tools they'll need to dunk it every time. They will work through
the process of selection, preparation and presentation. Arena StageÆs
casting director will make a guest appearance.

Mini Musical (12-15)
A brand new musical with lines, music and choreographyàall in four weeks!?
Is that possible? Yes! When artists work together, amazing things
happen.

Shakespearienced (12-15)
Beginning with the text, this Daily will guide actors through what they
need to transform classical words on a page into vibrant, dynamic
performances.

Filmmaking in the New Frontier (12-15)
Utilizing filmmaking tools of the digital age, campers will write, direct,
produce, edit, and even star in the most cutting edge films of the summer.

Second Daily
Intro to Painting (8-12)
As you might have guessed from the title, this Daily will introduce campers to, well, painting! We'll learn how to mix colors and apply paint while working from observations as well as our imaginations.

Scene Study (8-12)
Bring words to life! Campers are introduced to the basics of scene study and how an actor can use and interpret text.

Acting Time Machine (8-12)
Take a dramatic journey through time.  Beginning with the classics and finishing in the modern world, experience theater in different times in the best possible way – by acting!

Hip Hop Dance (8-12)
Get into the groove to all the latest hip hop music! Learn the latest moves from this cutting edge hip hop class that will work your body from head to toe. Each class consists of three sections: a warm-up, an across the floor combination and a dance routine. Feel the beat and, most importantly, have fun!

Filmmaking at Your Fingertips (8-12)
Utilizing filmmaking tools of the digital age, campers will write, direct, produce, edit, and even star in the most cutting edge films of the summer.

Stylo (12-15)
Some of the most unique style trends are not at the mall - they're right under your nose! In this Daily, learn how to take old clothes, creativity and lots of fun to make a style of your own! Campers will also create jewelry, hairstyles and more! Who knows? Maybe you'll create the next hottest trend!

Commedia dell’Arte (12-15)
Discover the brilliance and fun of this Italian dramatic form.  Using masks (made by you!) and stock characters, explore theater and the idea of character in a whole new way.

Costume Design (12-15)

Int/Adv Jazz Dance (12-15)
An American dance style inspired by African-American ragtime, jazz, spirituals, blues and work songs, jazz dance is marked by complex rhythms and movement isolations.  Discover your own response to rhythm, and surprise yourself with all the ways your body can move! Wear bare feet and comfortable clothing.  Previous dance experience required.

Playwriting (12-15)
Plays don't just materialize out of nowhere.  They happen when somebody has an idea or a story to tell.  In this Daily, campers find their stories and transform them into plays with plots, characters and dialogue. 

Solo Voice (12-15)
Ever want to be on Broadway?  Do you picture yourself in front of the judges on American Idol?  Well, you can make it happen!  In this class, campers will explore the music most suitable for his/her individual voice or singing style.  They will learn various performance techniques including, but not limited to posture, diction, and stage conduct. 

Chamber Music (12-15)
Be part of the first Camp Arena Stage orchestra!  Campers will play for one another, perform pieces of music and write original compositions that will emphasize each instrument.  This Daily is for more experienced instrumentalists who own their own instrument and can read music.

Third Daily
Comic Creation (8-12)
Pow! Wap! Pifffff!  Be a visual arts superhero.  Explore the ultimate art of frame-by-frame storytelling from pencil to ink to color.

Art through the Ages (8-12)
Not just learning, but doing art history, all the way from cave paintings through the modern era.  Draw on hundreds of years of artistic style to inspire your own art!

Actor’s Tools (8-12)
Begin to develop your skills as an actor. Through exercises centered on body, voice, imagination and teamwork, start to sharpen your tools and wield them with skill.

Mini Musical (8-12)
A brand new musical with lines, music and choreography…all in four weeks!?  Is that possible?  Yes!  When artists work together, amazing things happen.

Pick-Up Sports (8-12)
Who says artists don’t like sports?  Campers can run off some energy with basketball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, group games and more.  Let’s have fun and be active!

News & Notes (8-15)
Extra! Extra!  Grab your pens and notebooks, and let’s write!  We’ll tackle reporting and newswriting, publishing the camp newspaper.  Mix in some creative writing and poetry, and it’s a writer’s paradise!

Animation (12-15)
Animation is a precise and sometimes painstaking form of art – with tremendous results. From flip books to computer-aided animation, learn how to make art move!

Mask & Movement (12-15)
Explore the power of movement through the study of neutral mask and character mask, as well as theatrical styles.

Adv. Musical Theater (12-15)
Are you a triple threat: actor, singer, dancer?  Do you want to be? This Daily will increase your skills while focusing on scenes, songs and dances from that most American art form, the Broadway musical.

Int/Adv Modern (12-15)
Modern dance began as a reaction against classical ballet, and has evolved as a style of dance that expresses inner feelings and leads an audience to a new awareness of reality.  Use your body to tell your inner story, and work together on a moving piece of modern art! Wear bare feet and comfortable clothing.  Previous dance experience required.

Rock Band (12-15)
Experience the creative rush when musicians get together to play.  Campers will jam, learn new songs and rock out as a band.  This Daily is for more experienced instrumentalists who own their own instrument and can read music.    

Fourth Daily
Just a Broadway Baby! (8-10)
Broadway bound?  Chorus line crazy?  Learn to perform the fundamentals of stagecraft and vocal technique with songs from traditional American musical theater.  Beginners are welcome, so come join the line!

Stylo (8-12)

Physical Theater (8-12)
It takes more than words to tell a story onstage.  Learn aspects of mime and movement as you explore the physical side of theater.

Show Choir (8-12)
Sing! Sing! Sing!  In this course, campers will develop their choral skills while working with various styles of music such as musical theater, pop and show music tunes.  They will enhance their performance techniques and rehearse and perform regularly to prepare for the final show. 

Junk Percussion (8-15)
Create and play your own percussion instruments, made from everything from tin to trash cans.  Develop a performance that is as much fun to watch as to hear!  No prior experience required.

Surprise! (8-15)
Because of its popularity as a Choice last summer, Surprise Squad is back – as a Daily!  In this Daily take part in one of the greatest arts: planning and practicing random acts of kindness.

Chinese Brush Painting & Calligraphy (12-15)
Explore another culture through one of its traditional art forms.  Learn the ancient art of calligraphy and traditional painting styles.  Make exquisite works of art incorporating these techniques and poetry. Campers returning to this Daily can learn more advanced techniques.

Comedy Styles (12-15)
Ha, ha, ha…that’s very funny.  But why? Explore different comedy styles from vaudeville to commedia to contemporary, and, in the process, discover your specific comic abilities.

ACTivate! (12-15)
Art can be a tool for change.  Create and then perform a theater piece focused on important issues in our world.  Explore and be inspired by the text of other socially driven playwrights while constructing our piece.

Scenic Design (12-15)
There is more to theater than acting!  Explore the technical side of theater as you design the sets and make the models that create a new world on stage.

CAS Best Dance Crew (12-15)
Calling all b-boys and b-girls: time to take your hip hop to the next level.  Advanced Hip hop students will try their hand at hip hop fusion! Just like on the famed MTV series, dancers will incorporate different styles, genres and music into their hip hop routines.

News Media & Documentary (12-15)
Washington is the news capital of the nation. Learn what it takes to be a nightly news anchor. Campers will film, produce and edit daily news packages and documentary features. The next-generation news-team starts here.

Fifth Daily
Seed Bead Jewelry (8-12)
Express yourself with beaded jewelry. Make wearable works of art with string and beads, starting with simple bracelets and advancing to more complex jewelry.

Mini Masterpieces (8-12)

Beginning Improvisation (8-12)
Welcome to life, unscripted!  This Daily is an introduction to improv. Learn basic skills - including listening, reacting quickly, teamwork, and trust - all by playing theater games.

Beginning Jazz & Modern Dance (8-12)
Discover your own response to rhythm, and surprise yourself with all the ways your body can move! Wear bare feet and comfortable clothing.

Disney Duets (8-12)
Come explore “A Whole New World” of vocal music through favorite Disney songs.  If you love to sing and love Disney, this Daily is a “Bear Necessity!”

Cumbia, Calypso and Other Caribbean Beats (8-12)
Feel the beat! Learn basic hand drumming techniques then move on to specific, island-inspired patterns. No prior experience required.

Filmmaking at your Fingertips (8-12)
Utilizing filmmaking tools of the digital age, campers will write, direct, produce, edit, and even star in the most cutting edge films of the summer.

2-D Mixed Media (12-15)
Campers will focus on different forms of collage and ways to manipulate and combine different materials.  We will be working with different types of paper, cardboard and found objects. 

Visual Poetry (12-15)
Integrate poetry with visual art, and develop a poetry portfolio that combines the visual aspect of a scrapbooking with the text of your writing.  We’ll also explore yoga and breathing to awaken the writer’s mind/body connection.

Adv. Acting (12-15)
Campers will hone their performance skills through the exploration of acting methods, improvisation, character development and scene study.  This Daily is intended for students with prior acting experience.

Long-Form Improvisation (12-15)
Work through and then beyond theater games in this more advanced version of improvisation, where one suggestion from the audience can become a series of unscripted scenes.

Hip Hop Dance (12-15)
Get into the groove to all the latest hip hop music! Learn the latest moves from this cutting edge hip hop class that will work your body from head to toe. Each class consists of three sections: a warm-up, an across the floor combination and a dance routine. Feel the beat and, most importantly, have fun!

Songwriting (12-15)
Write your first hit song or your hundredth chart-topper. Learn the technical basis for turning your ideas into a song.  Create simple melodies and learn to add layers of harmony and texture to compose a music masterpiece.
