Red makes Arena Stage history
On Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012 John Logan's Tony Award-winning drama Red, under the direction of Goodman Theatre Artistic Director Robert Falls, became the highest–grossing non-musical in Arena Stage's 61–year history. The production, which is produced in association with Goodman Theatre, features four-time Helen Hayes Award winner and D.C.–based actor Edward Gero as abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko and noted Chicago actor Patrick Andrews as Rothko's fictional assistant Ken. CONVERSATION: EDWARD GERO ON ROTHKO, REDFebruary 8, 2012
PBS
Jeff Brown
"Mark Rothko was one of the giants of American art in the 20th century, known for his luminous abstract paintings, rectangular fields of color and light, which for many had an almost spiritual quality to them. Rothko died in 1970. His life has been turned into art in the play Red, written by John Logan. Staged first in 2009, Red is now at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., in a production directed by Robert Falls…" Read more

"The type of modern art that some people find infuriating is perhaps best exemplified by Mark Rothko's paintings — smudgy squares writ huge, with no story, no figures and usually not even a title…" Read more
UP CLOSE WITH THE MAGIC OF ELEPHANT ROOMJanuary 27, 2012
DC Theatre Scene
Terry Ponick
"Elephant Room isn't really a play and it isn't really a magic show. In fact, it's a little hard to define. One of the show's PR blurbs breathlessly promises that if you combine 'the glory of a Styx reunion tour, with the transcendental power of a 200-year-old Zuni shaman and add a dash of trailer park ennui, you come close to describing the mystical pull of a trip to the Elephant Room...'" Peter Marks
"Robert Falls was, to put it bluntly, tired of hearing himself talk. Decades in the rehearsal room had, in his mind, calcified his directorial style. The process worked well for him, of course, as he has spent 26 highly productive years as head of Chicago's Goodman Theatre…" Read more

"The Apollonian and the Dionysian co-exist more or less peaceably in the body of 26-year-old Chicago actor Patrick Andrews, who plays the pliant assistant Ken to Washington favorite Ed Gero as the bellicose and brilliant modern artist Mark Rothko in a much-anticipated run of Red…" Read more
