Fellowship Disciplines

Arts Administration Opportunities

Marketing Fellow – serves as an integral part of the Communications Department and a full participant in the planning, implementation and execution of marketing strategies; facilitates marketing and media-related events and promotions; drafts and edits copy for promotional items; develops and implements strategies for audience development; provides administrative support.

Media Relations Fellow – assists with the creation and compilation of materials for press packets; implements strategies to garner coverage of Arena productions and programs; assists with photo shoots; works on press releases; tracks media coverage; provides administrative support.

Group Sales/Audience Development Fellow – supportsthe Group Sales/Audience Development team office with its efforts to cultivate and maintain relationships with corporations and organizations to augment Arena Stage’s group sales effort; researches, contacts and develops relationships with potential new groups; coordinates special events for groups; provides administrative support.

Development Fellow – assists in all areas of fundraising, including individuals, corporations, and foundations; drafts grant proposals and donor correspondence; researches prospective donors; assists with the preparation and implementation of special events and mailings; provides administrative support.

Company Management Fellow – assists the Company Manager and Assistant Company Manager in the daily operations of the production department; helps facilitate all aspects of a production’s creative staff’s time at Arena Stage, including writing and preparing union and non-union contracts, arranging travel and medical appointments, providing and coordinating ground transportation, and maintaining artist housing.

Management Fellow – works on special projects in support of the Executive Producer and Artistic Director, including board relations, budget analysis, contract development, and corporate and foundation research; attends senior staff, board, and committee meetings.

Finance Fellow– processes invoices and purchase orders; assists in preparation of payment to vendors and personnel; assists in account reconciliation for various departments for income and expenditures; provides administrative support to the finance staff.

Artistic Opportunities

Directing Fellow – observes and assists the director throughout the rehearsal period; attends production meetings; supports the artistic process.

Literary Fellow – assists the Literary Manager with compiling research and creating research packets for the mainstage productions; generating content for Sub/Text: Your Virtual Dramaturg and Arena Stage’s Blog, Stage Banter; coordinates the Theater 101 audience enrichment program and engagement activities surrounding the mainstage productions and presentations; line produces the Downstairs New Works Series; reviews scripts and writes script reports, providing administrative support.

Casting Fellow – assists the Associate Artistic Director and the Casting Director. This is an opportunity to gain experience in artistic development, contracts, line producing, casting, and artist-theater relations.

Technical production Opportunities

Costumes Fellow plays a vital role in both production and presentation of the costume shop; assists designers on productions, including research, paperwork, note taking, costume bible creation and maintenance, and assistance with fittings; serves as wardrobe for at least one production; serves as stitcher for the costume shop; assists the First Hands and Drapers during the build of costumes; assists the Costume Director and Costume Shop Manager.

Lighting Fellow – works alongside some of the top lighting designers in the field; acts as the resident assistant for visiting lighting designers during their residency at Arena Stage and assists the Master Electrician and staff electricians in the planning, implementation and maintenance of the lighting designs and systems. Applicants must have proficient computer-aided drafting and a strong knowledge of theatrical lighting practice, common office software, and theatrical lighting equipment.

Stage Management Fellow – experiences the entire process of putting together a production in the realm of stage management, including the rehearsal process, the production and technical process, and the show running process; duties include preparing schedules, preparing notes and other paperwork, assisting in rehearsal duties, and assisting in backstage duties.

Community engagement opportunities

The Community Engagement Division’s purpose is to build a future for the American theater by cultivating future theater professionals, attracting new audiences, and enriching theater education in the schools and in the community at large. Candidates must be committed to arts education and community involvement; applicants should be strong teachers, strong writers, theater artists and administrators. Additionally, candidates must have excellent communication skills, computer literacy, attention to detail, knowledge of theater, and a passion for working with people.

In addition to programs listed in the descriptions, season fellows also work closely with Moving Stories and Voices of Now (VON), programs that provide experience in classroom teaching, workshop preparation and facilitation, program administration, and community involvement.

Education Fellow – assists the Director of Education, Schools & Professional Development with administration of the Student Playwrights Project (SPP), which includes an in-school residency program, teacher training, master classes, a ten-minute play competition, and culminating performances. Successful candidate also serves as teaching artist-in-residence in one SPP residency classroom during the school year.

Community Engagement Fellow – assists the Director of Education, Programming by providing administrative and artistic support for community outreach, Moving Stories, and Voices of Now (VON); acts as coordinator for VON mentor ensemble and stage manager/co-facilitator for VON ensemble; manages school partners who come to see Arena shows through the D.C. Ticket Partnership (DCTP); assists with student study guides and pre & post-show visits; serves as teaching artist-in-residence in one SPP classroom during the school year.
