Assistant Technical Director

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theatre, a national center for the production, presentation, development, and study of the American Theatre, is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Technical Director.

The Assistant Technical Director reports to the Technical Director and provides support in budgeting, scheduling, researching and purchasing materials, and overseeing construction, load-in and load-out of scenery for all productions.


  • Five years’ experience working in a professional scene shop, preferably in a supervisory capacity, or combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scenic carpentry, welding, and theatrical rigging practices
  • Ability to oversee and maintain organization of concurrent projects
  • Considerable experience creating technical drawings in AutoCAD and knowledge of theatrical drafting standards


  • Ability to adapt to frequently changing circumstances, work collaboratively with other employees and guest artists, and maintain a positive attitude in challenging situations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of theatrical automation and hydraulics preferred

This is a full-time position with benefits including Medical and Dental, Life, Retirement and vacation and holiday pay.
